The 17th International Congress on Hyperbaric Medicine: Cape Town South Africa- 16 to 19 March 2011

On behalf of the Organizing Committee of the 17th International Congress of Hyperbaric Medicine, we would like to invite you to attend the congress in Cape Town from. Visit the conference website www.acitravel.co.za/ichm2011/ for more details.

We believe we have crafted an exciting and dynamic programme, designed around the present interests and pressing needs of modern diving and hyperbaric medicine. While obviously making provision for papers and posters - to encourage and support attendance of the international presenters - the following additional topics and presentations are planned for this event:

  1. Critical reviews on the evidence base for the practice of hyperbaric medicine in key areas: e.g., Radionecrosis, Diabetes & Crush Injuries.
  2. Identification of shortcomings of current evidence on hyperbaric therapy with interactive discussion on research design and suggestions for the study of those key areas where evidence is lacking.
  3. Update on the absolute and relative contra-indications of HBO (e.g., the changes in approach to bleomycin and disulfiram, etc.)
  4. Overview of essential Occupational Medical Principles and Practice as they relate to:
    • Diving Medical Examinations and
    • Hyperbaric Staff and Patient issues in Hyperbaric Centers
  5. Update on saturation diving (to offer those with no experience the opportunity to get info from those practicing actively in this area) including a review of current occupational medical evidence (e.g., the ELTHI study and the outcome of the Long Term Effects of Diving Workshop).
  6. Medical Director's safety responsibilities regarding staff, patients and Medical Equipment in Hyperbaric Chambers.
  7. Practical issues surrounding Wound Care in Hyperbaric Medical Practice - e.g., managing ischemia and hypoxia through a multidisciplinary approach.
  8. Fitness to Dive controversies and new directions.
  9. Acrylics - the facts and the fallacies about viewports and windows in hyperbaric chambers.
  10. Risk Assessment for Hyperbaric Facilities - bridging the international statutory and operational guidelines for the everyday practice of hyperbaric medicine

Provision will also be made for workshops and interactive sessions. A parallel session for divers will also take place.

In addition to the usual papers, interesting and controversial topics are being planned that are likely to attract international interest, including:

  • Diving Accident and Fatality Investigations - Jim Caruso, MD & Simon Mitchell, MD, PhD
  • Hyperbaric Chamber Safety - Francois Burman, Tom Workman & Rob Sheffield
  • Hyperbaric Acrylics Maintenance Course - Francois Burman, Tom Workman & Rob Sheffield
  • Wound Care Perspectives on HBO - Dr Adrianne PS Smith, MD
